Awesome Blanching Basket
I just recently started to can and this item is a great helper! I canned tomato jelly, whole tomatoes, stewed tomatoes and salsa. And this is better than blanching one tomato at a time. It 's great! It makes short work of blanching your tomatoes. I am so pleased with this item!! And it stores so conveniently away.

Home Canner's Essential Tool
After seeing the 1995 version of the Ball Home Canning book,which had an illustration of the product being used for blanching tomatoes, I knew at once I just HAD to have this. The unit is easy to use, easy to clean, and the two handles are intriguing to use: one handle is slightly larger in width than the other, which allows the larger handle to slip inside the smaller one to lock the basket in the upright position, perfect for holding produce within. Then, using a large spoon, or other similar tool, the basket then can be lowered into boiling water while the handles are kept above, allowing for easier blanching and control of the food. I would not be without it in my canning equipment.
More of a pain to use than a help
This blanching basket is not as much of a help as one might expect it to be. If you are doing an extremely small batch of green beans, pickles, tomatoes, etc. it might be a help. It is nice that you can dip your food in and take it out immediately. That does make canning easier. However, if you get too much food in the basket it spills out the sides where the tall open portion of the basket is. In addition, if you do not have just the right size pot to use with it, the basket either fits too tight and you cannot get it and the food all the way into the boiling water or it opens too wide and all the food spills out completely and you have to remove some of it with a spoon or tongs (muting the entire purpose of the basket). Sometimes the utensils you use to get your food out of the basket and into the jar gets hung up in the holes of the basket and slows you down.
